Fireworks on July 4th have a tradition dating back to 1777 when Philadelphia celebrated the first anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, then commencing a 240 year tradition.  In 1870, the U.S. Congress made July 4th a federal holiday and since then fireworks, food, and patriotic music are part of July 4 festivities throughout the United States.  Around the Chesapeake Bay here are the places where we can pack a blanket , picnic and post up for July 4th fun.

CHESAPEAKE, VA – July 3 Celebrate America's Birthday with the US Fleet Forces Band and fireworks courtesy of The Town of Chesapeake on Independence Day Eve.

ST. MICHAELS, MD - July 6 (Rain Date July 7) Big band music and fireworks, starting at 7pm at Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, is how St. Michaels is celebrating Independence Day.  For those boaters, anchor on Miles River to enjoy the shows.

CHESAPEAKE CITY, MD – July 4

To celebrate their Independence Day Chesapeake City is having live music at Chateau Bu De and fireworks.  Music starts live at 4pm on July4th.  On Friday the 5th, fireworks start around 9:00 PM at Pell Gardens.

NORTH EAST, MD Salute to Cecil County Veterans - July 3

Nothing says patriotic like military equipment, Pledge of Allegiance and flag raising to celebrate Independence day.  Add local musicians playing patriotic songs and fireworks and North East Community Park will be swelling with pride.

Join the U.S. Navy Jazz Band Commodores in the heart of Baltimore Harbor for a Fourth of July Celebration. The fireworks can be viewed from the downtown parks, local neighborhoods, rooftop decks and floating boats in the harbor. 

SOLOMONS ISLAND, MD Solomons July 4th Fireworks Celebration - July 4

Fireworks will follow the patriotic parade of decorated boats.  This unique nautical event is the toast of southern Maryland.  

OXFORD, MD - July 3

The Strand in Oxford offers breathtaking sunset views from all sides of the peninsula but on July 3rd, fireworks will follow that beautiful sunset. 

WASHINGTON, DC Nation’s Capital Fourth of July 4thJuly 4

Watching the fireworks is one of the highlights of DC’s Fourth of July celebration.  Starting with the National Independence Day Parade at 11:45 a.m.  The parade is followed by a Capitol Fourth concert and fireworks on the National Mall starting at 8 p.m. 

NORFOLK, VA Fourth of July Great American Picnic - July 4

Fireworks over the James River caps off a family fun free event at Victory Landing Park in Newport News, VA.  The event begins at 7 p.m. with fireworks starting 9 p.m.

DUNDALK, MD Independence Day Parade and Fireworks – July 4

For 85 years Dundalk, MD has been hosting a patriotic 4th of July Parade with this years theme is "Dundalk — Built on Steel; Called to Serve".  The parade follows a 6K run put on by the Heritage Foundation.  Fireworks start at 9:15 p.m. at Grange Elementary. 

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - Stars and Stripes Explosion – July 4

The Stars and Stripes Explosion can be seen on land or beach or by boat.  Multiple live performances, including a tribute to Billy Joel, on oceanfront stages is followed by fireworks. 

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Mount Trashmore – July 4

Virginia Beach is extra patriotic with a second fireworks events at Mount Trashmore.  Come to the park starting at 4 p.m. for live music, food, and fireworks! Admission to the event is free and open to the public. 

YORKTOWN, VA Yorktown Independence Day Celebration – July 4

A free family-friendly celebration, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. in Historic Yorktown, VA. 8K run, 5K walk, patriotic parade along Water and Main Streets, live music, and fireworks over the York River. 

FORT MONROE, VA – July 5

Fireworks at Fort Monroe begin at 9:15 p.m.  Civilians can come celebrate on the base for this picturesque event. 

CRISFIELD, MD Freedom Fest - July 6

The local American Legion presents a celebration of our nation’s birthday with great food, live patriotic music, games, military appreciation and fireworks at Somers Cove Marina. Fireworks begin after the stunning Crisfield sunset at 9:15.  

HAVRE de GRACE, MD Independence Day Celebration & Fireworks - July 6

The Annual Independence Day Celebration, featuring the regionally renowned parade honoring local first responders. A fun block party then concert at Hutchins Park will follow the parade and ending with fireworks at dark.  Parade starts at 2.

MIDDLE RIVER, MD Community Fireworks on Middle River - July 6

Celebrate fireworks at dusk off Wilson Point on Middle River in Middle River, MD. Perfect to find a dock nearby and watch this explosion of color. 

YORKTOWN, VA – July 4

Yorktown is packed with 4th fun!  From the morning 8K or 5K run to the parade to the fireworks, this town knows how to celebrate.  Fireworks will be exploding over the York River at 9:15.

WILLIAMSBURG, VA – July 4

If you wish to have the full colonial experience to celebrate our nation’s birthday, head to Colonial Williamsburg.  Aside from the special patriotic educational activities, the night will end with “The Lights of Freedom” fireworks display fit for a salute to our founding fathers. 

CHESTERTOWN, MD – July 4 Wilmer Park is a spectacular viewing spot for the annual 4th of July fireworks shot over the Chester River. Show begins at dusk
