Unless you’re one of the lucky people in the know, you’re probably guilty of driving past Cape Charles on the lower Eastern Shore without a second thought. The bayside hamlet is often overlooked for its more happening neighbors. But behind the town’s sleepy exterior is a quirky spot full of good eats, beautiful beaches and great golf. Here’s how to spend the perfect summer day there.

MORNING

8 a.m.: Get a Morning Jolt Start your day at Cape Charles Coffee House, where the baked goods and premium coffee is as delicious as it is caffeinated—and you’d never guess the menu includes organic and gluten free with the best French toast.

9 a.m.: Hit the Links One of Cape Charles’s many features is the award winning golf courses at Bay Creek designed by Jack Nicholas and Arnold Palmer.   It has been described as “a secret Chesapeake paradise’ and with incredible views of the Chesapeake Bay. 

AFTERNOON

1 p.m.: Go Where It’s Pristine Explore the waters of the Lower Chesapeake Bay and the Barrier Islands that is only accessible by boat.  Local tour company, Cape Charles Boat Tours,  can offer excursions to enjoy the spectacular beauty of the estuaries and marshes sitting within the unspoiled islands on the Virginia Eastern Shoreline.

Alternate 1 p.m.: Paddle To Bliss

3 p.m.: Surround Yourself in Beach Beauty Some days you want to body surf in the waves, and some days you just want a beach where you can lazily float all day. Cape Charles Beach is a beautiful bay  beach with white sand, parking and facilities.

4 p.m.: Shanty Time By now the sun is high in the sky and you’re thirsty. Take a break from the beach and head to The Shanty.  The drinks are on par with the view -  spectacular!
